It all started in 1888
with a simple observation. John Boyd Dunlop, a Scottish veterinarian living in Belfast, watched his young son struggle to ride his tricycle across a bumpy cobblestone street. The solid rubber tires of the era were jarring, slow, and uncomfortable.
Driven by a father’s desire to give his son a smoother ride, John had a “lightbulb moment.” He wrapped the tricycle wheels in thin rubber sheets, glued them together, and inflated them with a football pump.
The birth of the first practical pneumatic (air-filled) tire.
Dunlop opened his first tire factory in Dublin, Ireland.
